DEADLINE September 20, 2019 : OPEN CALL FOR VIDEOS: Manifest Dismantling

OPEN CALL FOR VIDEOS: Manifest Dismantling
A screening of experimental moving image works organized by Mobius Artists Margaret Bellafiore and EL Putnam.

During the 19th century, the Industrial Revolution paved the way for our current patterns of consumption, which in turn have brought us to the brink of climate collapse in the 21st century. Also during this time, modern nations were stabilizing and fortifying their borders as exclusionary markers of travel and trade, informing our present patterns of mobility. What at the time appeared to be acts of progress were actually gestures of destruction.

Artist Jenny Odell* uses the phrase “manifest dismantling” to describe activities that counter these patterns and their remnants of destruction: “I am interested in manifest dismantling as a form of purposiveness bound up with remediation, something that requires us to give up the idea that progress can only face forward blindly. It provides a new direction for our work ethic” (2019, p. 192). In a time of climate crisis and violent borders, we believe art is a creative activity that enables such dismantling.

We are seeking short experimental moving image works (max 15 minutes) by artists living, working, or are from either the United States or Ireland relating to themes of climate collapse or borders for a two-night screening event taking place at the Cyberarts Gallery in Boston October 31 and November 1 2019.

Please note that Mobius is a small non-for-profit artist-run organization and we are unable to pay fees for participation. All information collected on the application form (including emails) is used solely for the purposes of the screening event and is not distributed or used for other purposes by Mobius or the event organizers.

Questions? Please contact Margaret Bellafiore at margaretbellafiore@verizon.net or EL Putnam at el@mobius.org

* ENDED * Call for Readers and Sounders : The Mueller Report July 4, 2019

White house juxtapose with text.jpg

On July 4 (Independence Day!), citizens will read The Mueller Report in its entirety.

https://www.justice.gov/storage/report.pdf

The place: Boston Common at 1 PM to how long it takes.

The reason: It is important that we read this report whether we agree with the findings or the process. How can we be informed citizens if we do not READ it?!

The plan: to assemble together on Boston Common and simultaneously read sections of the 448 pages. The number of pages each reader will be assigned depends on the number of readers that volunteer. In addition, we need to note redacted (blackened) sections by some form of sound. Each reader could do this in their own way. Each reader could have a sounder next to them with an instrument, noise maker, etc. when the redacted passage comes up.
