*ENDED* Deadline for proposals: Friday, June 3, 2016: OUTSIDE / INSIDE

...is two site-specific performance art events happening on Spectacle Island, and Georges Island in the Boston Harbor curated by Alice Vogler, Drik Adams, Jan Willett and Vela Oma.

There is a rich history of art happenings on the Boston Harbor Islands over the last twenty years, including last year’s installment of TBOS4 on Spectacle Island which was under the umbrella of The Island Arts Initiative that happened on Georges and Spectacle Islands during the summer of 2015. The Bumpkin Island Art Encampment which happened from 2007-2011 and was curated by Megan Dickerson, Carolyn Lewenberg and Jed Speare and was co-presented by Studio Soto, an artist performance/screening/exhibit space in Fort Point; Mobius; and the Island Alliance. Boston Cyber Arts, the National Park Service and Boston Harbor Island Alliance collaborated on an ongoing project on the LED screens at the Boston Harbor Island Pavilion on Boston’s Rose Kennedy Greenway for a 24 month stretch during 2014-2016, and through its public art program (formerly called Vita Brevis), the ICA Boston hosted Art on the Harbor islands in 2007.

We are seeking proposals for site-specific performance art work that responds to the history and natural environment of each island.

This public space in the Boston harbor invites artists to think about their work in a public destination which includes families, tourists and Bostonians. Being conscious and considerate of this audience is a must.

On July 16 the Spectacle Island OUTSIDE/INSIDE event will happen - all work will happen OUTSIDE.

On August 13 the Georges Island OUTSIDE/INSIDE event will happen - INSIDE - all work will happen INSIDE the fort barracks.

Each event will be from 12noon - 5pm.

Deadline for proposals: Friday, June 3, 2016

Applications are reviewed by a curatorial team and notifications will go out via email on: Friday, June 24, 2016.

Applicants are not required to be from the Boston area, though Boston artists are strongly encouraged to apply.

While we encourage artists from every part of the world to apply, we are not able to cover travel expenses, but can offer lodging and some home cooked meals for a few days around each event.

Some important things to know about each site:

Work can be durational or time based

There is a small honorarium for each chosen artist.

The site visits are free!

Your ferry trip to the island on the day of the event is free!

Tides. They really change the entire landscape of the beach area, so check them out.

No fire.

No nudity.

No digging.

No affixing anything to walls or structures without permission in advance.

Be respectful of the island. There are a few places that we need to avoid going. The general request is...if visitors can't go there, we can go there either.

You can only use what you can carry over on the ferry.

Nothing can be left on the islands, no remnants left behind.

There is no electricity at either island.

These events are made possible in collaboration with National Park Service, the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) and the Boston Harbor Now (formerly the Boston Harbor Alliance)
