Brown University celebrates Ugly Duckling Presse, a volunteer-based editorial collective that has published over 200 books by emerging, international and 'forgotten' writers of poetry, translation, experimental nonfiction and performance texts — the press also publishes artist's books. Many of the books, broadsides and periodicals contain handmade elements that call attention to the labor and history of bookmaking.

The John Hay Library will host a book display of Ugly Duckling Presse titles from 11 am.

The program will shift to the McCormack Family Theater with a Small Press Roundtable at 1:30 pm. The roundtable will feature Ugly Duckling Presse editors Anna Moschovakis and Matvei Yankelevich, as well as Damon Krukowski, Erica Mena and Patrick Riedy (all editors of distinguished literary presses).

The program will continue in the McCormack Family Theater with performance works at 3:15 pm. The performances will reflect upon, be inspired by or be represented through Ugly Duckling Presse books – and will be presented by dancers Alisa Cardone and Sara June (with music by Max Lord), Darcie Dennigan, Sawako Nakayasu and Mike Taylor.

Following the performances (around 5 pm), a reception will take place in the George Rattner Room (adjacent to the McCormack Family Theater). The reception will afford participants and audience members an opportunity to informally discuss the literary contributions of the Ugly Duckling Presse and of its authors and editors.

The program will conclude with literary readings by Kate Colby, Mónica de la Torre, Damon Krukowski, Cole Swensen, Simone White and Sara Wintz.
