Steve Norton and Tom Plsek—I still remember trudging through the snow on a February night in the 90s to hear these two knock it about with Gino Robair at WMFO. They’ve worked together as part of the epic quartet Kobold, and in ensembles mining the music of Anthony Braxton. They are still at it and still going strong.
Mr. Dirky is Dirk Adams making sounds from uncovered detritus, gltiched and cracked recordings, sputtering mechanical objects, and ravaged vocals.
In Transit (Kozue Matsumoto, koto; Patrick Behnke, viola; Chris Foss, shakuhachi + bassoon) is an improvised collaboration of traditional Japanese and traditional Western instruments. Based in Los Angeles, the ensemble mediates a series of dichotomies in the sonic language of two cultures as well as the new and old language within each culture to arrive in a unique landscape. The name, In Transit, stemmed from a meditative moment watching flower petals move in an organized way across a puddle and a joke about public transportation announcements.
