“This music is completely surprising and simply overwhelming…..building the most incredible crossings of styles”.
Neue Musikzeitung

Lawrence D. “Butch” Morris continues his revolutionary chronology of Conduction®, and in doing so, addresses many questions now being asked concerning the future of Jazz, ensemble music and the orchestra.

In the last 25 years over 199 Conductions have been constructed, engaging thousands of musicians from many cultures, and astounding audiences in 19 countries and 87 cities.  The “Lucky Cheng Orchestra” has been specially assembled to decipher this unique idea and to forge a broader understanding.

Conduction has amply demonstrated its capacity for cultural diplomacy. Conduction not only broadens the realm of musical possibility, it also helps to maximize the potential of existing and probable musical directions.

….One of the most extraordinary bodies of work in contemporary music.

“By now we know to expect the unexpected from the downtown maestro: he's bringing his "conduction" process, a unique method of spontaneously creating orchestral music, to a chinese restaurant associated with waitresses in drag and walls covered with busty pin-ups. Rather than his usual saxophones and brass, Mr. Morris's current ensemble consists mainly of symphonic strings (even the double basses are bowed arco), woodwinds, and world-music instruments. He weaves freely improvised melodies and harmonies, which rise and fall over the course of extended canvases. As in his 2007 score to the Italian film "L'Amore Nascosto," Mr. Morris's music has a cinematic quality that paints vibrant images in the listener's head. At times he directs the massed musicians in violent stabs of sound, at others he brings out startlingly lovely dissonances and consonances that are rather like finding a Bird in Igor's yard.” – Will Friedwald, WALL STREET JOURNAL (9/23/11)

“All kinds of folks downtown are conducting improvisers these days, but Lawrence D. "Butch" Morris is the orchestrator who gave the concept wings. Here, the local fixture presents his latest spontaneous creations—encompassing avant-jazz, free-funk and much more—at the new incarnation of his old Nublu haunt.” – TIME OUT NEW YORK Critics Pick (9/11)
