In 1967, John Cage and Merce Cunningham visited the Skowhegan School of
Painting and Sculpture. Upon arriving, they discovered that a performance
by them was scheduled for the following evening. Cunningham could always
dance, but Cage was completely unprepared. He developed a performance
based on found materials, and only afterwards did he title it Variations
VIII. Forty-four years later, members of the Mobius Artists Group and
guest artists will return to Skowhegan, bringing nothing, and in one day
develop a new performance based on materials found at the site.
