Global Communication is not just another contemporary art festival. It is not a festival if we think of a festival as a presentation. Our project is a platform through which audience is able to communicate with artists and space where they are working on. Why artists are working „on” a space rather than „in” a space? And why this „reversed” communication is so important in the relation between a space,an artist and audience? Because an idea on which the whole project is based concerns nomadic and inimitable aspects of art. What does it mean? It means that we are interested not in activity of artists but in their creativity. One can say that we are inviting them to perform as they have never performed before because we are asking them to invent a new actions; new ways of communication by their art with what sourrounds them. It is not just another „performance-art-piece” in a new space – but brand new interactive action and intervention with the people. It is why we have no „presentations” in our festival – it is almost impossible to step outside such performance; to watch it from a distance; not to take part in it. Last year those performances were presented in various spaces in and outside Mazovian Centre of Contemporary Art in Radom, Poland. This edition of the festival is dedicated to an Idiom which represents a topic and main subject of the whole project in 2011: „Open space / Free space / Work”.
First of all we don’t want to focus on one place – we want to create a project that can work in different countries and in different contexts and needs.
1. In Radom/Poland we have to use an open city space because MCCA „Elektrownia” will be rebuilding and there is no possibility to perform inside centre. One can say it is a limitation of this place – but from the other hand last year we were performing in and outside centre and during this time we have been collecting a lot of information about the city and its people: how they react on Live Performance Art based on interaction?, do they find theirselves in this very new situation?, are they cooperate with artists?, will they are ready to participate if we organize the whole project totally outside – on a streets („totally” means – all aspects of the project: actions, interventions, lectures, wokshops)? This knowledge is priceless because of several reasons: (a) no one has ever done it before us!, (b) people somehow recognize „the game and the players” so it will be much more easier to convince them to work together, (c) Radom really needs activities like this and ther is more than a lot of „public space” noone really use, (d) people from Radom needs modern and contemporary art – they need to be treated as normal european city (e.i. Brno/Czech Republic). Anyway - „Free and Open space” in Radom means the opportunity to put some live and real emotion in the structure of the city; to work with the people; to allow them to create their own art; to make a possibility for them to rebiult the relations between the people and the place.
2. The Brno House of Arts is a contributory organization of the statutory City of Brno. Although its current focus is primarily on contemporary art, it has been an integral part of Brno’s cultural life for almost 100 years. The Brno House of Arts is an open, modern institution, which mediates and initiates contact between artists and the public at large. It has a long tradition of being one of the most significant influences on Brno’s culture, and aims to become a dynamic space through integration into a network of prestigious European galleries. The Brno House of Arts is one cultural institution with two exhibition locations and three gallery spaces. Also it is the most official place we want to have in our project. Their expirience and fame can be priceless in searching how is open art working in such place. At the same time those institutions are a models and a symbols of a place integraly connected to the official structure of the city.
WORK
Let’s resume what do we have untill now. Two different places places - House of Art/Dom Umeni/Brno/Czech Republic and MCCAElektownia/Radom/Poland – from almost intimate place to common and wide open. From one country and one borderline to another. Almost neighborhood. But this is still NOT enought!
Borderline, neighborhood, connections – this is not the main topic of this project. What really builds a connection between those places and people is „Work”. „Work” is a symbol of a lot of effort we have to put if we want to communicate. And it is not just about communication between the organizers – it is about the program; artists; ideas; places; schedules; languages. It is about how we are going to find ourselves in this project – in places we perform; in places we know; in places that has already changed from the time we have last seen it. Of course, we are all friends. No doubt! But it is still NOT enought! This is NOT about friendship! Global Communication Festival is not a project for ourselves. This is something for the people. Those words above are not just an empty idea because we have already arganized the first edition of this project in summer 2009 in Mazovian Centre of Contemporary Art in Radom, Poland. It was not just and empty words also because of one more thing: we were able to create an idea and put it into effect; such idea which has been developing from the beginning till the end of the festival and far away... This is also not an empty idea because we would like to invite people to join this nomadic project in each country we will be coming out. We would like to ask an artists to travel with us through two editions of festival in two different countries and collect their feelings, impressions and notices not only for the future; but to develop every part of this project. Our project creates artists as well as creates publicity and space between them! This is not a competition; this is not a race – this is what we call „founding creativity” and it doesn’t really matter if it is Poland or Czech Republic – people need a kick! And we try to provide it!
