In Incubator, viewers lay down inside the piece – a 7’x4’x4’ cubic wood structure - experiencing the tactile and audible sensations of low-frequency tones and pulses directly in their body. This works employs theories of vibro-acoustic therapy (VAT) and sympathetic resonance to impart specific frequencies directly into the body of the participant. The full 15 minute session as composed and administered by the artist traverses frequencies associated with calming and entraining brain-wave states, opening and tuning of chakras, promotion of relaxation, mood elevation, anxiolytic effects (anxiety reduction), and pain relief.

In Optimizer, viewers enter a 13’ icosahedron structure containing 12 speakers, wherein sounds pan from speaker to speaker in spherical spatiality. Sine-waves in relationships of 12 harmonics move independently around this form in semi-randomized motion, creating a sound that is constantly modulating and changing around the viewer while maintaining a stabile harmonic structure. Frequencies chosen for this work have been associated with achieving clarity, awareness, balance, and a sense of well-being. Viewers are asked to write down an intention related to personal growth and direction before entering this piece.

Viewers contributing $5 gain entry to Optimizer and a screening of Incubator. Independent 15 minute therapeutic sessions in Incubator are $10, and given on a first-come, first-serve basis. Refreshments of water and home-made tea will be provided after each session.

Information inspiring the creation of the frequency content in this work comes from the evolving field of vibro-acoustic and frequency-resonance therapy and anecdotal as well as experiential/empirical evidence. Participants are asked to gauge their own comfort level in the experience of these works, as individuals may respond differently to frequency content.
