A shared evening program, 'Ocean's Body' features 3 works by artists from Boston, New York City, and Paris, France. Tidal' is a site-specific piece created for the stage from movement research conducted at the 2010 Bumpkin Island Art Encampment, in the Boston Harbor Islands of Massachusetts. Dancers Sara June and Nathan Andary (Boston) create a series of body-land sculptures that mimic tidal movement over Bumpkin's "gut" - a land bridge to Hull, Massachusetts that emerges at low tide. The piece features live sound by Max Lord on persephone, and mixed percussion and electronics. The second piece will feature Liz Roncka (Boston) and Christophe Delerce (Paris, France) who will perform 'Untitled,' an improvised duet featuring real-time composition. 'Spectral' a short film and butoh performance by Vangeline and Geoff Shelton (New York City) features a butoh film inspired by the former 19th century textile mill that is now home to the Gaga Arts Center (gagaartscenter.org). The mill, built in the 1830’s, employed over 800 people at one time and became the epicenter of the small town built around it. Over it’s 170 year history of prosperity, tragedy and abandonment, a strong presence has developed within the walls, between the buildings and along the empty roads. The artists seek to translate this visceral quality to the audience through cinematic language and butoh performance. The evening will conclude with an informal celebration with the artists.
CPR is located at 361 Manhattan Avenue in Williamsburg, Brooklyn and is the singular new development for the performing arts in Brooklyn’s first L.E.E.D.-certified green building of its kind. This 4000 square foot arts facility is an artist driven initiative co-founded by Jonah Bokaer/Chez Bushwick, Inc. and John Jasperse/Thin Man Dance, Inc. This new development provides affordable space for rehearsal and performance, innovative arts programming, education and pedagogical engagement with the communities of New York City and abroad, as well as a dynamic new model for sustainable arts infrastructure in dance and performance. During a real estate climate that threatens to displace the arts from maintaining permanent and affordable space in New York City, CPR offers a pioneering approach to both civic development and fortification for dance and performance at the community level.
