Vic Rawlings' ongoing experimentation in sound has produced a still and unstable sound language that has been put to use in performances exploring broad dynamics, from the sheer volume and density of the Laurence Cook Disaster Unit to the low volume austerity of undr quartet and the BSC. He has developed two principle objects for sonic practice: tools to create a music to exist between categories. The amplified/ prepared/ acoustic cello features extensive and invasive preparations- some directly based on obscure Baroque instrumentation. The other instrument, purely electronic, employs the exposed circuit boards of sound processors for production of source material and is sonically realized by an array of raw, decaying speaker elements. This electronic instrument is effectively an analog synthesizer with a highly unstable interface as well as an unpredictable/ idiosyncratic acoustic voice. Rawlings' evening residency at Mobius will feature these two instruments.
When offered an evening residency at Mobius, in addition to a solo set, Rawlings proposed setting various collaborative musicians into working groups that have never occurred before, reflecting his committment to creative growth in experimental sound practice and community building. Joining Rawlings for the evening are Mike Bullock (Bass); Tim Feeney (percussion & electronics); Jake Meginsky (percussion); Liz Tonne (voice); & Mobius Artist James Coleman (Theremin)
