REQUEST FOR QUALIFICATIONS (RFQ) for ARTIST RESIDENCY PROGRAM
GUIDELINES

MISSION STATEMENT:
To provoke public dialogue through contemporary art making.

VISION:
18th Street is a community which values art making as an essential component of a vibrant, just and healthy society.

RESIDENCY PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
The Residency Program provides subsidized studio space to artists and arts organizations depending upon need and the quality of residency proposals.  Residents are given access to office and audio/visual equipment, and meeting space, event posting service to the internet, full representation on our website, and fiscal receiver services.  Individual apply for a 3 year term of residency and Organizations apply for a 5 year term.  Residents are also required to participate in the Community Service Program by providing a service (to be determined in negotiation) provided to 18th Street and its residents. Examples of services range from graphic design work to legal consultation services to discount admission to ticketed events.

SELECTION PROCESS:
The Program Committee reviews RFQs & determines qualified applicants. Qualified applicants are notified by to submit updated application materials or proposals. Selection Committee reviews proposals and interviews applicants to determine the most qualified applicants.

No fax responses will be accepted and all packages must be received in our office at 1639 18th Street, Santa Monica, CA. 90404. All submissions will be date and time marked upon receipt, which will be the determining factor in the event of a dispute.

REQUIRED SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIALS:
(Incomplete applications will not be considered)

Resume or brief biography: including educational background, exhibition record, teaching experience, any relevant awards, collections, etc. (3 pages maximum)

Support Documentation: Up to 8 pages of reviews, articles, letters of recommendation, promotional materials, etc.

Statement: A brief description of your perspective and priorities as an artist or organization, your intended ‘audience’, why you are interested in our Residency Program, what services you might offer as a resident, and your immediate and long-term goals as an artist or organization.  (1 page maximum)

Work samples: As appropriate for your medium (i.e. visual artists – slides/photos; time-based artists – video/audiotape). From 10 to 5 visual samples (slides/photos) or 10 minutes of video or audio samples will be reviewed. All work samples must be clearly identified and labeled. Tapes must be cued to desired reviewing section. Please enclose SASE envelope if you wish materials returned.

SELECTION CRITERIA:

The Program Committee selects emerging to mid-career artists and organizations based on the following criteria:
• Artistic merit and integrity of applicant’s work.
• Appropriateness of applicant and their work for 18th Street and its Mission.
• Demonstrated commitment to or support for contemporary art making and the potential for community-based, mutually beneficial relationship with 18th Street and its residents.
• Underrepresented constituency groups.
• Ability of applicant to be a fiscally responsible resident.
• Completeness of application.
