Think of a chrysalis, or a cocoon. At a critical stage in some creatures’ lives, they become quiet, to outside observers apparently immobile. Later they reemerge, seemingly as new beings. As well, there’s hibernation, when other creatures take long periods of necessary rest. In the summer of 2020, Mobius formed a chrysalis, entered hibernation, for the first time since the late 1970s. This may have been overdue. But COVID-19 both provoked this quiescent phase and made it possible. The multiple ongoing crises of racism, authoritarianism, and climate collapse also required that Mobius pause for self-examination. Now, in the fall of 2021, we are reemerging. We are grappling with metamorphosis and intend to continue doing so. But we are ready to find our communities again, and to present new art, digital and live. It is good to be back with you.
