Mobius values innovation, vulnerability, artistic development, and non-hierarchical relationships of mutual respect among our members.

Diversity Statement

Since 1970 Mobius has actively supported experimental art in all media. Yet, in solidarity with global struggles to decolonize arts institutions, we recognize that we must investigate our positioning within Euro-American-centered avant-garde legacies rooted in racist colonial hierarchies that have historically devalued innovative non-white artistic expression. We value a consistent revisioning of our practices as artists and as an organization in order to bring a diversity of aesthetics and ideas.  We are committed to an ethics of inclusion and equity and to expanding our understanding and exposure to experimental practices by actively prioritizing racial, ethnic, gender, sexual, age, class, religious and ability diversity among our members and board.

Core Values

We value innovation, vulnerability, artistic development and non-hierarchical relationships of mutual respect among our members.

We respect the integrity and support the empowerment of each member.

We value collaboration and believe that collaborative arts organizations such as ours can contribute to the transformation of societies through supporting artists whose works contest the interwoven constraints of aesthetic orthodoxy and political oppression and envision liberated futures.

Actions we have taken to bring our Core Values to Fruition:

Mobius has met regularly to re-examine and discuss a path to move forward towards a more equitable and diverse organization. The following is a list of steps we have taken during this time of reflection and reorganization:

Held monthly meetings with Mobius Artists Group members to investigate our positioning within Euro-American centered avant-garde legacies rooted in racist colonial hierarchies that have historically devalued innovative non-white artistic expression.

Creation of committees: Online presence, Equity & Inclusion, Programming.

Underwent Equity and Inclusion trainings with Elizabeth Baker and Sofia Egelman of freeskewl.

Met with artists and curators Michael Sakamoto and Nathan Lewis to discuss Mobius’ role in the arts’ community, the public perception of our practices, and to receive feedback on how we can do better in all aspects of our operations.

Revised Mission Statement, Rights and Responsibilities document.

Created new policies including a Grievance procedure, Community Agreement and Safer Spaces policies.

Created a new website that reflects our Core Values.

Elected 3 new co-directors.

Actions we are currently undertaking:

Active recruitment of new Mobius Artists’ Group and Board members to reflect the diversity in race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, religious affiliation, socioeconomic class, neurodiversity, age, and ability reflected in the artistic community locally, nationally and internationally.

Create salon style events with invited artists to share their work and engage in conversation with our members about their process and issues…...
